4 Plants That Will Clean The Air of Your Indoor Space
HOW TO CLEAN THE AIR POLLUTION FROM YOUR HOUSE, SALON, AND BUSINESS
The air in your home, workplace, could be dirtier than you think, polluted with unhealthy fumes from household cleaning products, hair styling and hair coloring chemicals, or fumes from seasonal wildfires, resulting in health problems like allergies, respiratory problems, and even cancer.
Here are the 4 plants to have in your home or workplace to filter the unhealthy air and supply oxygen:
1. Sansevieria, commonly known as Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law's Tongue, will clean the air in your bedroom and around the house while you sleep at night, because it does photosynthesis without needing sunlight. It is a succulent, so it is drought tolerant and does not need frequent watering. Sansevieria is easy to propagate by separating the side shoots, or by leaf cuttings, (although with leaf cutting you would loose the beautiful yellow outline of the plant.) Uses indirect sunlight. NASA states that this plant can make oxygen in space. The Snake Plant could be bought in your local garden store at the houseplant section. (N.Z.)
2. Aloe Vera: a great performer when the air filtering is involved. It cleans Volatile Organic Compounds from your home, and don't think your house is free of them: most spray products from house cleaners and hairsprays contain VOCs. This is another plant safe to have in the bedroom or nursery, providing you with much needed oxygen to sleep well at night. Like the Snake Plant, Aloe Vera is a succulent, which could be propagated from side shoots, just cut the side plant growing from the mother plant and replant halfway into a sandy soil-water and forget about it: it will grow indoors all over US. Aloe Vera plant likes shade. Water once a week. (N.Z.)
3. Pothos: very popular hanging or climber plant used widely from Eurasia to Americas. Pothos is a marathon air cleaner, it removes poisons from air, and you will sleep well at night knowing that the smog and toxins are being cleaned by this plant. It also removes smell out of your home, weather it is a heavy cooking smell or an odor permeating from a trash bag. Good plant to have in bathrooms. This plant is less upright than Snake Plant and Aloe Vera and it does well on windowsills protected from extra heat, over the fireplace, a counter, or on a stand, because it likes to hang freely and takes wider space than Snake Plant. You can make the plant smaller by snipping the branches and planting (propagating) them in a new planter. It also thrived in standing water in a vase or a glass jar by producing roots to absorb water (water needs to be changed from time to time). (N.Z.)
4. Spider Plant, called thus because it produces a long thin stem out of the plant and creates a new plant that could be transplanted to a planter. It works against the Silent Killer: Carbon Monoxide that most gas stoves can omit of left on without flame. It also cleans the formalin gas omitted from hairspray products, and other fumes from household cleaners. Like Pothos, Spider Plant branches can travel away from the mother plant, so make sure you have enough space for it, or you can just control it the way you would control Pothos by trimming the newly formed branches. (N.Z.)
In conclusion:
If you live in an air polluted area or use household cleaning products and hair products that omit unhealthy fumes, or your area is prone to wildfires or dust, investing in an air filtering plants like Snake Plant, Aloe Vera, Pothos and Spider Plant would help maintain clean air in your house, business or beauty salon.
